Something is broken
Almost everything that goes wrong here is one of about fifteen things, and most of them you can fix in under a minute. Work through the three checks below first — they solve the majority of reports — then find your specific symptom.
Do these three things first
VPNs, Tor and proxies are blocked at the server, and this is by far the most common cause of "it does not work". Many people run one without knowing — ad blockers, "privacy" apps and some antivirus suites install themselves as a VPN. Look for a key or VPN icon in your status bar.
The status page monitors every service independently. If it shows red, the problem is ours and nothing you do will help. If it shows green, the problem is local to you.
Check service statusGenuinely. Close the app completely (do not just minimise it), reopen it, and if that fails restart the phone or computer. This is a cliché because it works.
Playback problems
The video keeps pausing to load (buffering)
Lower the quality. Open the gear icon during playback and pick 1080p or 720p instead of Auto or Maximum. This fixes it the vast majority of the time.
If that does not help: move closer to the router or switch to a cable, stop other large downloads in the house, and check whether someone else is streaming at the same time. On mobile data, a weak signal will do this no matter what quality you pick.
Nothing will start playing — something about a stream limit
That is the simultaneous stream limit, not a fault. By default an account plays one thing at a time, shared by everyone using it — so if someone else is already watching, your playback will not start. It does not sign anyone out and it does not interrupt them. Wait until they finish, or add streams — see Live TV & motorsport for how the tiers work.
Black screen, but the sound plays
Your device cannot decode that video format. Try a different app — the official Jellyfin app and Streamyfin handle more formats than a browser does. In a browser, try Chrome rather than Firefox or Safari. If it happens on one specific title only, report it with the ⚠ button on that title and choose Video — the file itself may need re-encoding.
Picture plays but there is no sound
Usually an audio format your device cannot handle, often surround sound on a device with stereo speakers. During playback, open the speaker icon and choose a different audio track if one exists. On a computer connected by HDMI, also check that the TV is selected as the output device. If the title genuinely has no working audio, report it with the ⚠ button and choose Audio.
Subtitles will not appear
Start playback, bring up the controls, and click the speech-bubble icon — subtitles are off unless you turn them on. If the language you want is not listed, that file does not contain it.
You can set a default language once so you never have to do this again: see Your account & settings. If a title is missing subtitles you need, report it with the ⚠ button next to Play and choose Subtitles — a track can usually be added the same day.
Subtitles are out of sync with the speech
The subtitle file was made for a different cut of the film. Some apps let you shift subtitle timing in the playback settings. If not, report it with the ⚠ button and choose Subtitles — replacing a badly-synced track is quick.
Connection and login problems
I see a "Proxy detected" page
Your connection is coming through a VPN, Tor or a datacentre proxy, all of which are deliberately blocked. Disconnect the VPN and reload. Hotel, office and university networks sometimes route through proxies you did not choose — in that case try mobile data instead. If you are certain you are on a normal home connection, open a ticket and include your public IP address.
I cannot log in at wizarr.karafa.net
You are not supposed to. Wizarr is only for redeeming your invitation once, when the account is first created. It is not a login page and it is not where you watch. Go to jellyfin.karafa.net instead and sign in there with the username and password you chose. This is the single most common misunderstanding on the whole server.
The app says "cannot connect to server"
In order of likelihood: a VPN is running; the server address has a typo (it is https://jellyfin.karafa.net with nothing after .net); your internet is down; or the server really is offline — check the status page. Test by opening jellyfin.karafa.net in the device's browser: if that works and the app does not, delete and re-enter the address in the app.
My password is not accepted
Capital letters matter, and phone keyboards love to capitalise the first letter of a username automatically — check that first. Confirm the password works in a browser before blaming the app. If you have genuinely forgotten it, there is no self-service reset: open a ticket at the help desk and we will reset it manually, usually the same day.
Since setting up Karafa DNS, some sites will not load
A filter list is probably blocking a domain the site needs. Send us the address of the page and we will allow it. To confirm that is the cause, temporarily set DNS back to automatic — the undo section takes thirty seconds. Note that captive portals on hotel and airport Wi-Fi always need encrypted DNS turned off while you sign in.
Library and request problems
A film that used to be there has disappeared
This does happen — a disk failure in the past has taken content with it, and space is tight enough that things occasionally get rotated out. The fix is the same either way: request it again and the automation will fetch it fresh, usually within hours.
I cannot find a title I am sure exists
Try both the Slovak and the original title — the library's metadata is mostly Slovak, but not universally, so a film may be filed under either. Searching for an actor or director often finds it faster than guessing the exact wording.
My request has been "Processing" for days
No good copy has been found yet. This is normal for films still in cinemas, and for very old or obscure titles. Give it a few days; if nothing changes, open a ticket with the title and we will look manually. Requesting it repeatedly does not speed anything up.
My home screen is empty
Brand-new accounts often show an empty home page until you have watched something. Open a library from the top menu and it will be full. If an entire library is missing, permissions may not have been set for your account — tell us and we will fix it.
A specific title is broken — wrong film, bad quality, no audio
Report it from inside Jellyfin — no need for a second site. Open the title and click the warning triangle (⚠) next to the Play button, pick Video, Audio, Subtitles or Other, and submit. That flags the exact file, which is far easier to act on than a message saying "the Batman one is broken". Full walkthrough.
Still stuck? Report it properly
Open a ticket at the help desk. Tickets are tracked, so nothing gets lost in a chat thread — and
writing to [email protected] creates one automatically.
Include these five things and it will usually be solved in one reply instead of four:
- Your username.
- The device and app — for example "iPhone, Streamyfin" or "Windows laptop, Chrome".
- The exact title you were watching, if it involves a specific film.
- What the error said, word for word. A screenshot is ideal.
- Whether it happens every time or only sometimes, and when it started.
